Alice Martinez San Ildefenso Black Pot 1974

Signed “Alice Martinez, San Ildefonso” and dated 4-74. Beautiful example of black pottery mastered by San Ildefonso potters, including Maria Martinez, this  highly burnished pot is in fantastic condition except two small scratches. Over the last fifty years, Alice and her son Ruben have perfected the Tunyo Polychrome matte on polished black style pottery that the Martinez family from San Ildefonso had become famous for back in the early 1900’s. They make pottery the traditional way; they gather the clay from sacred grounds within the San Ildefonso Pueblo, clean the clay, hand coil, shape, and fire the traditional way, outdoors, with horse manure. 3.5″x4.75″ Please see pictures for condition details as the photos are considered part of the description.
