Caridad Santa Francisca de Paula Mexican Tin Retablo

$500.00

Description

Late 19th or early 20th century Mexican tin retablo of Santa Francisca de Paula with  caridad surrounded by flames in brown barnwood frame. Tin has some slight paint loss commensurate with age. San Francisco de Paula is credited with miraculous cures, resurrecting the deceased, protection against fires, comfort for the maimed, the blind, and otherwise disabled, and preventing plagues. Here he is shown in the traditional manner with caridad (charity) in flames in upper left corner. The tin retablo (behind the altar) form developed as a folk art tradition and center of devotion when traditional places of worship were lacking in villages throughout Mexico and the new world. They were also painted as an offering to the church for display on the altar or above an entry. Painted almost solely by amateur artists, they are charming in their naivete and poignant in their reverence. 21.75″x17.75″x2″ Frame, 13″x9″ Image
