Late 19th or early 20th century Mexican tin retablo of Archangel San Miguel (St. Michael) in blue armor with sword and scales in a handmade wooden frame. Tin has some slight paint loss commensurate with age. San Miguel is the Captain of the Hosts of Heaven who will defeat Satan at the end of days. He is shown in traditional manner with his blue armor with stars, the flaming sword, and scales of justice to weigh men’s souls. The tin retablo (behind the altar) form developed as a folk art tradition and center of devotion when traditional places of worship were lacking in villages throughout Mexico and the new world. They were also painted as an offering to the church for display on the altar or above an entry.
